Biografie

For the most of us it’s hard to remember, or we’re too young to have even been around yet, but it wasn’t until 1989 that the Berlin Wall came down. Born in 1971, growing up in East Berlin had a massive impact on young Paul van Dyk. Having no record stores in East Berlin to learn and get acquainted with music through LP’s, Paul secretively listened to forbidden West Berlin radio stations to know what was going on in the world. Him and his friends had to smuggle mixtapes into the city and then copied the tapes amongst them. Right before the wall came down he moved to Hamburg, to return to Berlin in 1991. Even then, Berlin was already a pioneer in the EDM industry and the city was already far ahead compared to the rest of Europe with clubs like Tresor and Berghain. And it was at Tresor where Paul had his very first DJ gig ever, debuting at a stage like that can only mean one thing; You’re gonna be big. Since then his career as a DJ and producer has been legendary and he is considered to be one of the pioneers of the industry, with countless awards to his name. His international stardom came around 1994 with his hit ‘For an Angel’ and it has never left him, on the contrary today he circles the globe 16 times a year entertaining a EDM loving crowd of around 3 million people. One of his biggest accomplishments was when in 2008 on New Years Eve he performed in Brazil before a crowd of 1,5 million people. Overall his music is labelled as progressive trance, but Paul hates to categorise his music. He plays a variation of trance, hardtrance, house, techno, rave, chill out and electro, therefore he claims that his music is simply put electronic dance music. Also head of his own label VANDIT, he is mentor to other well-known DJs such as Giuseppe Ottaviani, Alex M.O.R.P.H. and Judge Jules. Having literally overcome boundaries, this epic DJ is a true advocate for the entire EDM industry and getting rid off musical limitations.
